All generic domain extensions and several country-code ones support a security lock feature whose purpose is to hinder unauthorized transfers of existing domain names. Many domain name registry operators that manage ccTLDs that do not support this feature are in the process of adopting it for the sake of safety and for the convenience of the domain owners. A domain name can be transferred only on the condition that it is unlocked and only a registrant who has been given access to the account with the current domain name registrar can do that. New domains are registered with the lock feature enabled on purpose, so as to stop any unauthorized transfer attempts. The lock feature is among the security measures for controlling the transfer of active domain names between registrar companies that have been adopted over the years.
